Oriol Romeu, Barcelona’s ‘Big Surprise’ of the Season, Says Xavi

In a surprising revelation, Barcelona coach Xavi has reportedly expressed confidence that Oriol Romeu, the club’s imminent signing from Girona, is poised to be the “big surprise” of the upcoming season.

Oriol Romeu, the former Southampton and Chelsea midfielder, is closing in on a permanent transfer to Barcelona for a deal reported to be worth €5 million plus add-ons. The 31-year-old has completed his medical tests, and his transfer to the Camp Nou could be made official any moment now.

Romeu, who is set to take up the midfield mantle from the departed Sergio Busquets, is expected to be a regular in Barcelona’s setup next season. This shift is particularly remarkable given the price tag and the age of the player.

Speaking to the media after his medical tests, Romeu expressed his excitement over the impending move to Barcelona. When asked about his upcoming switch, he responded, “Yes, I’m happy,” though he admitted that he had yet to speak to Barcelona coach Xavi.

The move was reportedly expedited over the weekend when representatives from Barcelona and Girona met to iron out the final details of the transfer. While Girona were not entirely satisfied with Barcelona’s offer, they reportedly did not wish to prevent the player from seizing this opportunity.

As part of the deal, Barcelona’s Pablo Torre will be heading to Girona on loan for the rest of the season. Discussions regarding a potential loan deal for Nico Gonzalez were also held, but complications arose due to interest from FC Porto.

Romeu, a La Masia product, has remained familiar with Barcelona’s philosophy. His outstanding performance for Girona last season is likely a major factor behind his return to his boyhood club. Romeu is now set to be the ‘big surprise’ of the season at Barcelona, following Xavi’s assurance to club president Joan Laporta.
