Eugene, Oregon played host to one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the athletics calendar – the Diamond League 2023 Final. Indian javelin throw star, Neeraj Chopra, finished second behind Czech athlete Jakub Vadlejch in a nail-biting competition, as reported by Tricity News Hub.
At the Hayward Field on Saturday, Neeraj Chopra managed a commendable 83.80m throw, although it fell short of Vadlejch’s 84.24m effort. The event did not witness any athlete crossing the 85m mark, with the conditions perhaps playing a role in the throws.
It’s noteworthy that Neeraj, the reigning Olympic and world champion, holds the Indian national record with a staggering 89.94m. Only last year, at the same venue, he clinched the world championship silver medal with an impressive 88.13m throw.
However, the Diamond League 2023 Final saw Neeraj start with a foul, gaining momentum on his second attempt. He found himself momentarily eclipsed by Vadlejch’s 84.01m initial throw. The competition heated up when Neeraj’s third throw reached 81.37m, but a subsequent foul gave Vadlejch the edge, who managed to stay ahead despite his own set of fouls.
Jakub Vadlejch, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, reaffirmed his status with the night’s best mark, defeating Chopra for the second time this year. Neeraj’s previous performances in the 2023 Diamond League series showcased victories in Doha and Lausanne. Yet, he had to contend with a second-place finish in Zurich.
